In January 2024, I made an illustration for VPRO Podcastgids, where Mina Etemad reviewed the Dutch podcast "In Afrika Besta Ik Niet" (translation: "I don't exist in Africa"), which depicts the struggle of being African and Queer through Nanoah and their Nigerian father.
The flowers in the illustration are trumpet flowers, which is Nigeria's national flower. They symbolize a state of being that exists in between or outside the gender binary, as well as both hiding (obscuring their face) and opening up or "blooming" as flowers do.
