Free Heri Heri For All is a campaign held around July 1st every year, in celebration and commemoration of the Netherlands abolition of slavery on July 1st 1863 (unofficially 1873). 2026's campaign image was made by me, with the theme 'heirlooms' in response to an open call in late 2025. The slides below show a large banner that hung across from Amsterdam Central Station to announce this year's campaign.
Heri heri is a Surinamese meal, which organisations across the Netherlands give out for free in collaboration with KIP Republic, the minds behind Free Heri Heri For All. This year, illustrated cards were also given out with the meals (see last picture), as a symbol of passing something on to someone else. A few places that gave out free heri heri this year were Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Poppodium 013, Bibliotheek Rotterdam, Museum FENIX, Artis, and Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
